I’ve been reading about local crime in the media and have another method of stealing from you that the RCMP didn’t mention, but I’ve seen it in action.

Working on Tucelnuit Drive I noticed that one of the one-ton work trucks (F350, or the like) locked all its doors as a vehicle drove by it. Unfortunately, I didn’t notice what make of car/truck it was. I looked over at the driver of said work vehicle and noticed he was working with both hands in an excavation. This means that he did not activate the locks on his truck. I asked him to make sure.

Criminals are now driving along broadcasting lock signals to vehicles, and when the parking lights flash, they know they have a victim. They lock the door so that you won’t notice that you have an unlocked car when you return to it. Then it’s just a matter of coming by at an appropriate time and relieving you of your vehicle and/or contents.

Similar tactics are used for power garage door openers.

Additional security devices are now a requirement in this day and age.

Powering-off your garage door at night and getting a “club” steering wheel lock are a couple of things a non-professional can do to reduce (probably never eliminate) personal liability to these thieves. Likely it is a bit much to ask of some folks, and those are the people who are dealing with the police and their insurance companies.

Time to take some responsibility. Just a matter of forming good security habits may help as the rest of the world discovers our little town.
