Taxes cannot be allocated in one direction without that being at the expense of other aims in society.
Offer my dictum from way back: with a precautionary approach, science is the only basis on which the government should act. To do otherwise is to succumb to the mob and forego the advice of ancients who gave us our western democracies’ scientific underpinnings in 1787.
As an old pilot, I always say never close an airstrip because it will be gone forever; better, we should build more airstrips. But I don’t allow my own parochial concerns to intrude upon my good judgement as a member of the South Okanagan voting population. Rather, we should evaluate the Osoyoos airstrip idea in terms of whether the use of tax money is based on prudent, evidence-based analysis as to whether it is the best alternative for the entire region.
The airstrip in Osoyoos presents a critical challenge for Canada at large, and hence for our new government.
