Lawn bowlers from throughout the Okanagan Valley and beyond met in Osoyoos on Saturday for an open house and tournament.
The event was a meet of the Interior Lawn Bowling Association, explained Naga Terada, president of the Osoyoos Lawn Bowling Club, which hosted the event.
“It’s actually competitive, but it’s social as well of course,” said Terada, adding that it is important to maintain contact between lawn bowling clubs of the Okanagan, which are distant from clubs of the Lower Mainland.
“It’s very important that we have our own association in the Interior,” said Terada.
Visiting teams came from such locations as Kamloops, Salmon Arm, Vernon, Penticton, Kelowna and Oliver.
The day starts off with the “spider,” in which players form a large circle on the green and each player throws a bowl to the centre where there is a smaller white ball called a “jack.”
Under the bright sun, the players dressed in white stood out against the green manicured lawn. The sport appeals to a senior demographic, but the Osoyoos club hopes to attract new members from all age groups.
