MLA Linda Larson.
MLA Linda Larson will be making an announcement Thursday morning about funding for Osoyoos Secondary School (OSS) from the province’s recently created Rural Education Enhancement Fund.
The announcement takes place a 9 a.m. Thursday at the Osoyoos Town Hall.
The media advisory gave no details, but it would be unusual for an MLA to make the announcement in this manner unless it is good news.
Last week trustees of School District 53 voted 5-2 to apply for $490,000 in funding to offset the savings they would have achieved by closing the school and to pay for deferred maintenance.
Trustees will be meeting at the school district office in Oliver at 3 p.m. Thursday to consider the government’s response and to vote on a motion to rescind the bylaw passed in April that would have closed OSS effective Thursday. This vote was conditional on the district receiving the money it requested.
Voting last week not to apply for the funding were the two Oliver trustees, Rob Zandee and Rachel Allenbrand, who are concerned that if OSS stays open, it will mean fewer new courses for Southern Okanagan Secondary School (SOSS) in Oliver.
