The Oliver Kiwanis Junior Bonspiel was once again, a big success.

The event, which was held at the Eastlink Curling Centre on February 8, included 56 curlers or 14 teams, four from Oliver, four from the Penticton Curling Club, two teams from the Summerland Curling Club and four from the Osoyoos Curling Club.

Curling started at 9 am and the 12 junior teams played three, three-end games while the two senior teams played two, six-end games.

The day finished around 4 pm and everyone went back up to the lounge for awards and ice cream. The two senior teams were from Oliver, so needless to say, we had an Oliver winner.

The junior division was won by a team from Osoyoos. Second went to a team from Summerland, and two Oliver teams tied for third spot.

President of the Oliver Kiwanis Club, Ken Yoxall, handed out the medallions. He gave a brief talk about the mission of the Kiwanis.

All participants received a prize, regardless if they won or lost.

This year, with communities’ support, the club has been able to upgrade its grippers, sliders and brooms, and have made the big decision to make proper headgear mandatory on the ice.

To this end the club has also purchased curling “ice halos” for all of the juniors, and next year will make the wearing of them mandatory.

The juniors will be attending bonspiels in Osoyoos and Penticton in the next few weeks.

They play and practice every Tuesday afternoon starting at 3:30 pm. Everyone is welcome to come and watch at any time.
