School District 53 is bracing itself for potential job action by support workers this fall.

Support workers such as education assistants and custodians are looking for a new contract with the provincial government.

New bargaining dates have been scheduled for September 3-6 during the first week of school.

Superintendent of Schools Bev Young said there is a potential for escalating job action later this fall, depending on how bargaining goes and if a savings plan can be established.

School districts were previously asked to identify savings in their budgets to fund contract increases for support workers.

“Meanwhile we are focusing on a smooth and positive start-up for students and are hopeful that negotiations can advance,” Young said.
