The Dorcas Ladies of Osoyoos United Church handed over a cheque for $5,000 to the Osoyoos Fire Department last week from funds raised by the United Church Thrift Shop. Pictured receiving the cheque is Lieutenant Dan Scott. Making the presentation were Gretta Shannon, treasurer, Anne Polischuk, Thrift Shop manager and Janet MacKay, vice president. The Dorcas ladies contributed nearly $60,000 to various causes in 2016, mainly in the South Okanagan. (Richard McGuire photo)

No sooner did the Osoyoos Fire Department receive a donation from the Dorcas Ladies of the United Church when the firefighters continued in the giving spirit themselves, helping out the RCMP. Pictured here, Fire Chief Rick Jones (front right) presents a GPS and sonar device to RCMP Corporal Jason Bayda, acting commander of the Osoyoos RCMP. The device is for the RCMP boat, a Zodiac used on Osoyoos Lake. Bayda said it came about as a result of a recommendation by a couple from Idaho who helped in the recovery of a body on Osoyoos Lake in 2015. One of its main functions will be to help pinpoint the starting point in searches by allowing police to record the correct GPS coordinates. With side and depth scan sonar, it can also help to locate objects in shallow water. Jones said the firefighters raised the money for the gift through their annual oyster feed in April.
