An Oliver resident is warning others of a possible scam to watch out for.
Here are the circumstances as described by the homeowner:
Last night a girl came to my door and said that she was from Efficiency Solutions and asked if she could check our furnace for efficiency. She mentioned Fortis gas, so not thinking anything about it I took her down to check the furnace.
She said that I could save $107 a month if they put in a new furnace; the money that I saved on heat and hydro would cover the cost of the furnace.
I asked how much this was going to cost me. She filled out the contract, called her boss to see if I qualified, and I did. She asked me for a void cheque, but I don’t use cheques, so I said Saturday I would go to the bank and get a blank cheque. She said they would be here at 9 a.m. Saturday morning to install my furnace.
Well, no one showed up so I figured that’s because I didn’t give them the blank cheque for access to my account. But the girl told me that there were other people in her group go door to door with the same deal.
I thought that may be you can warn others in town that this is a scam and to check their bank accounts.
