Dear Editor:
I would like to take a moment to commend a group of young adults in our community.
Leah Hebert, Irene Harfman, Kasey Balogh, Amanda Loura, Sarah Pereira, Connor Williams and Colten Wimmer are the staff for the Summer Playground Program operated by the Town of Osoyoos through the Sonora Community Centre.
My three children are taking part this summer ,and after the first week, I was impressed with these young peoples’ ability to handle numerous children on a daily basis.
However, on Monday, July 16, my impression of these young adults grew immeasurably.
Our seven-year-old son has a rare genetic condition. Generally we are able to manage this through his diet and recognize the symptoms when he isn’t feeling well. Last Monday morning was an exception.
Less than an hour after arriving at the playground program, Charlie complained of a sore tummy and immediately passed out.
As a parent it was a frightening situation.
As a student looking after someone else’s child, I imagine it was quite terrifying.
However, these leaders were aware of his medical history and were so quick to deal with the circumstances that many of the other children (one of my daughters included) were unaware of what had happened.
I am so incredibly pleased these young adults are part of our community and thankful that in a medical emergency they more than rose to the occasion with calm heads.
I am grateful that my children are in such good care and hopeful that one day they will be role models to other kids as these leaders are to them.
By the way, Charlie is fine.
After a ride in the ambulance and a few hours in the emergency room we were headed home and he wanted to go back to play at the playground program.
My sincere thanks go out to all of these wonderful summer students for a job well done.
It is very much appreciated.
