A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help cover the funeral expenses and support the family of Ava Choy, the cyclist who lost her life after being one of three participants struck by a vehicle on White Lake Road on July 13 during the Okanagan Granfondo.

The campaign was launched by Amanda Coutts, who speaking on behalf of the Choy family said, “it is with broken hearts that we share the devastating news of the sudden and tragic loss of daughter and sister, Ava, who was struck and killed by a vehicle during the Okanagan GranFondo cycling event.”

“Ava was small in stature, but mighty in spirit,” Coutts said, reflecting on Choy’s vibrant personality and her impact on those around her. “Her determination, energy, and generosity touched so many lives. She was a Fire Dragon through and through.”

Coutts noted that the 49-year- old Choy was doing something she loved – “riding her bike amongst a community of cyclists who shared her passion.”

“She had a deep love for being physically active, a soul drawn to the beauty and peace of Hawaii, and a heart committed to helping others through countless hours of volunteering. Her determination, energy, and generosity touched so many lives. Ava was small in stature, but mighty in spirit. She was a ‘fire dragon’ through and through.”

Choy’s death has left her  family in deep shock and sorrow. “We are reaching out during this incredibly difficult time for support in covering the costs of her unexpected funeral arrangements and associated expenses. Losing someone so suddenly not only brings emotional pain, but financial strain as we navigate this heartbreaking chapter.”

Coutts noted that all funds will go directly toward giving Ava the “dignified and loving farewell she deserves.”

“If you’re unable to contribute financially, we ask that you keep our family in your thoughts and to share this page with others who may wish to help.”

At the time of writing the campaign had exceeded the $30,000 goal, raising over $35,000 from 338 donations.

Coutts thanked the community for their generous support and for sharing “:your kind words, joyful memories, and condolences, also. It has been heartening to see and feel the outpouring of support from all the communities Ava was a part of – your presence has been powerful.”
