More than 200 participants definitely had to shower after competing in the Freak’n Farmer obstacle race at Covert Farms last Saturday. Here, these ladies crawl through a mud bowl in search of . . . glory?

You didn’t have to be athletic to have fun at the Freak’n Farmer, but first time participant Rachel Gifford Allenbrand said it helps. She and her teammates took part in the fundraiser just for the sheer torture and had a lot of fun doing it.
“I am still sore and my lower back doesn’t like me much right now, but we can say we did it and next year we will know what we’re getting ourselves into!”
The 12-kilometre adventure obstacle race, which was held at Covert Farms on September 21, attracted over 200 participants from across the South Okanagan, each of whom endured 23 grueling and muddy obstacles designed in consultation with Brent Hayter of Crossfit South Okanagan.
“You never knew what was coming. We went through gross rotting vegetables, and then crawled on our bellies through the mud,” Allenbrand said.
There were a number of new additions to the event this year. Those changes included a new partnership with the Oliver Osoyoos Winery Association, the Freak’n Little Farmer, the 5K Half-Plowed Farmer, camping on the farm, a pancake breakfast before the event at the farm’s market and a pre-race dinner at the Watermark Beach Resort in Osoyoos on September 20.
