Dear Editor:

I urge everyone who possibly can to write to the board of trustees with School District 53 to voice your feelings, suggestions and questions and request a reply to your e-mail or letter about the possible closure of Osoyoos Secondary School and/or Osoyoos Elementary School.

The phone number to the School District office is 1-250-498-3481. You can access the mailing or e-mail addresses of the trustees by calling this number.

The petition with over 3,000 names on it opposing any school closures in our town is impressive and a huge effort, but the board will record receiving it, file it and that will be the end of it.

However, personal letters from individuals will be recorded as correspondence and will be replied to if requested, or if questions are asked.

Then, hopefully, all trustees will read their copies of received and sent correspondence.

As well as the enormous impact on our students’ lives and the economic impact on our community, what about the future of the Osoyoos Community Theatre should OSS be forced to close?

This quality designed and functional little theatre was built with Osoyoos taxpayers’ money after they passed a referendum to build it while the secondary school was being built.

Since it is built on School District property, it is a joint use facility and surely the School District has a responsibility by agreement to keep it operational for the community to use, along with the school it is attached to.
