Firefighters pass test
A fire broke out on Anarchist Mountain Thursday, July 21, testing the nerves of residents and the Anarchist Mountain Volunteer Fire Department once again.
The summer fire of 2003 burned for weeks before it was under control.
Ironically, July 21 was also the Anarchist Mountain Volunteer Fire Department's first official day as a legal entity, said Fire Chief Joe Simoes.
We had just been given the word that all the bylaws had passed and half an hour later, at about 4:15 p.m., we received the 911 call, Simoes said.
The fire was believed to have started by a spark generated by a piece of equipment working up in the area.
Although it took until noon Sunday to extinguish the fire, there were no injuries, and no equipment or homes were lost.
A total of four and an half hectares were burned in the four-day blaze.
You could say it was a real baptism by fire, Simoes said of the timing of the incident.
