More than a few times in the past four years, we’ve heard some local residents complaining about their local government.
This is especially true on social media, where critics can snipe with “angry” emoticons without ever looking their targets in the eye or engaging in real dialogue.
Given the grumbling we’ve heard, it’s surprising that more people haven’t put their names forward to run for Osoyoos town council. Council is only as good as the best candidates.
As of our press deadline on Tuesday, there were two candidates for mayor and four for councillor positions. That’s enough to require a mayoralty election, but unless more people come forward, the four councillor candidates will simply be acclaimed, without giving town residents any choice.
Of course it’s quite likely a few more people will file their papers before the deadline of 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14.
The town held an information session last Thursday for people considering running and there was a handful of people there who are at least thinking about it.
While we might not agree with all the decisions made by the last council, most of the outgoing council members have worked countless hours doing their best to serve the people of Osoyoos.
We hope, however, that the coming election will bring some new blood. And hopefully at least a couple council members who are younger and can represent people with young families.
Details on how to become a candidate are in this week’s lead story and there is more information on the Town of Osoyoos website. It just takes a few forms and a couple people to sign your nomination.
Serving on council is a big commitment, so hopefully the people stepping forward will be dedicated. But as some of the municipal leaders said on videos shown at Thursday’s session, it can be a greatly rewarding experience.

I would offer that an increase of 3 over the 2014 list of prospective councillors (7 vs 10) says a great deal about how the town feels the last 4 yrs have turned out.
I truly hope we see a full set of fresh faced councillors in the seats after the 20th of Oct. best of luck to 8 of them.
