FIREFIGHTERS SELFLESSLY GIVE — ABOVE & BEYOND CALL OF DUTY

(OSOYOOS TIMES — April 4, 2007) —

Our hats go off to Fire Chief Rick Jones and all the members of his Osoyoos Volunteer Fire Department.
Not only do the crew of 28 selflessly give of their time and energy to be ready at any time to come out and fight fires around Osoyoos, but they've just shown again how central they all are to the spirit of our town with not one, but two fundraising events for great causes. (See photo on Page 11)rnFirst was the Fire Department's annual giant 'Oyster Feed', a fun bash held at the Elks Hall that sells out quickly every year.
There's great food, great entertainment “ and great oysters, both raw and deep-fried “ and the event is supported by a host of local companies.
The funds raised go to the Burn Unit at Vancouver General Hospital, as well as to some local charities in need of help. Last year the local firefighters were able to go to Vancouver and present a cheque for $2,500 to the Burn Unit.
In our books, that one event would be enough. But the Fire Department is doing even more.
This Saturday, April 7, it will hold an open house at the Fire Hall, showing off the Hall and fire trucks for all who want to come and see them, and even have their photos taken next to a truck.
This is a fundraiser too “ with up to half of our firefighters ready to shave their heads if people come up with the right cash donations. The cause this time is the B.C. Cancer Society, and the firefighters are doing it in honour of one of their own, who was recently diagnosed with cancer.
We're lucky to have such a great bunch in our town, not only protecting us, but going above and beyond the call of duty.
Support them this Saturday!
