GOOD MOVE TO PUSH FOR RECYCLING OF AGRICULTURAL PLASTICS

(OSOYOOS TIMES — Nov. 15, 2006) —

A few items worthy of note this week:

Kudos to the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) for its pilot project to develop recycling methods for plastics used in agricultural operations in the area.
The aim is to cut down on plastics going into local landfills and to reduce the burning of plastics that sometimes end up in the burn-off fires to get rid of orchard waste.
RDOS is showing itself to be taking positive action on a number of environmental fronts, and this plastics initiative is another welcome step in keeping the South Okanagan a wonderful place to live.
Osoyoos Town Council is to be commended for agreeing right away to have the local landfill join in the pilot project “ eliminating tipping fees for the agricultural plastics and setting up a collection system for them.
* * It was a nice move by Destination Osoyoos last week to have a senior Bank of Canada analyst visit town to talk about the economic outlook for B.C. and Canada.
Too bad more local business people didn't turn out for the informative luncheon presentation.
* * We hope Baltic Properties' Mariposa seniors care facility proposal can be saved by 11th-hour talks among Baltic, Interior Health and Town Council. If necessary, it should be moved to another spot in town that suits all the parties and overcomes the problems the town and many citizens have with the highway intersection spot now proposed.
It's too bad the communication has to come this late in the game. If IH, the Town and Baltic had all had a more open approach early-on, it would have saved a lot of grief.
Everyone likes the proposed facility, so let's get on with it.
