Now is the time for compromise and healing in this community
The just-completed municipal election was a hard-fought and at times divisive campaign.
But that is over now and the voters have made their choice. Now is the time for everyone in this community to put aside their differences and think about what is best for Osoyoos. Everyone involved must respect the decision of the majority of voters – that is how a democracy works.
For re-elected Mayor John Slater, one of his main challenges will be re-uniting and healing some of the divisions that have occured in Osoyoos. We wish both congratulations and success in his next term.
Dick Flintoft, Ted Cronmiller, Stu Wells and Allan Carswell will also play pivotal roles in what is hopefully a healing process. Again we congratulate them on their victories and wish them success in their new roles.
Now is the time for compromise, understanding and reasonable attitudes, but that isn't just true of our politicians. Everyone who has a stake in this community must take on that responsibility, including this newspaper.
What the most recent election campaign has shown us is there are different opinions on how Osoyoos should be run and how it should develop. That is okay, however, the real challenge now is finding some consensus and moving forward. Those on this new council had the courage to let their names stand and were elected. Now we must allow them to move forward on governing this community.
