A POST-CHERRY FESTIVAL/ TRIATHLON ROUNDUP OF CHEERS AND JEERS

OSOYOOS TIMES-July 9, 2008

Cheers to the Osoyoos Fireworks Committee for putting on a spectacular show on July 1 to cap off the 60th annual Cherry Fiesta.

The nearly 30-minute-long display was breathtaking and worth the hype that had been building in the weeks and days prior to the show.

It was truly refreshing to see so many people” some local, some from away” come together to enjoy the celebration of our town and our country.

(And by the way, that large fireball that went off halfway during the display: that was a planned special effect.)

Jeers to the people who showed their appreciation for the festival and fireworks display by leaving their trash all over Gyro Beach after the show was over.

Pizza boxes, plastic bags and drink containers were left behind by a number of people who should really know better.

And apparently the litter bugs were not confined to Gyro Beach.

Tim MacMillan of Osoyoos informed the Osoyoos Times that a beach on Cottonwood Drive was also trashed following the display.

He also said one local man was able to collect three-and-a-half garbage bags of garbage and recyclables left behind after the fireworks spectators went home.

Further jeers to the men at Gyro Beach who decided to relieve themselves in Osoyoos Lake after the fireworks display ended, even while several people were still swimming in the water before them.

What an ignorant way to say Happy Canada Day.

Finally, cheers to all the local volunteers who helped out with the Persona Desert Half Iron Triathlon on July 6.

Not only did they help co-ordinate and take care of all the participants, the volunteers showed outstanding enthusiasm in cheering on competitors as they took to the water, hit the streets for the running portion of the event or cycled the last stretch to the finish line.
