A NOTE ABOUT THE PRINCIPLES OF THE OSOYOOS TIMES
OSOYOOS TIMES-May 7, 2008
The Osoyoos Times is not only a source for news, it's a window into what is happening in this community from week to week.
We want to give coverage to the stories, events and occasions that give Osoyoos its character and culture and we do our best to be as objective and inclusive as we can.
It should be known, however, that the Osoyoos Times does have standards and guidelines that we strive to follow.
What goes into the pages of the newspaper each week is at the discretion of the editor and if a story or photograph or reminder about an upcoming event doesn't make it in, it's almost always for a good reason.
Space issues are one of those reasons as we only have a finite amount of room in each issue.
Another reason is fairness.
Every voice in town deserves to be heard and there are no grudges or biases within this newsroom towards anyone in the community.
In order to make sure all angles are covered within this little part of the world that we pay attention to, sometimes one story is given preference over another due to how interesting it is or how timely it is.
All that we ask for is consideration of our deadlines and an understanding of the decisions we make each week in terms of what stories we tell, whether with the written word or a photograph.
Being told that we must put something in the paper or being criticized for not putting something in comes across as antagonistic, as it is the job of the editorial staff here to make those kinds of decisions.
We welcome submitted stories and photographs as long as they are tasteful, timely and interesting.
We try to make room for contributed items whenever we can and we want you, the members of the community, to feel as if you play a part in this newspaper too.
Monday is our production day and usually anything that comes in after noon on a Monday will have to wait for the next issue.
If you do submit something, please include as much information as possible as well as contact information.
Feel free to check in with the editor if you have something you feel is worthy of going in the newspaper.
Finally, if there is something going on that you would like us to cover, let us know with as much advanced warning as possible.
We like to do what we've been trained to do and we may be able to find different angles or points of interest on everyday stories or occasions in town.
If we have missed something in the past, we're sorry, but we're trying to make sure that from now on our eyes and ears are everywhere in Osoyoos.
