— Funding will support education & research programs —

(OSOYOOS TIMES — Jan. 3, 2007) —

The Osoyoos Desert Centre was one of 205 organizations awarded a total of $6.3 million in community environmental and safety grants last month by the B.C. government.
The Desert Centre is being given a $45,000 environmental grant, designed to help non-profit community groups deliver programs that enhance the environment or protect wildlife.
Desert Centre Executive Director Joanne Muirhead told the Osoyoos Times the grant is very important for the Centre “ making up about one-third of its total annual funding.
We will use the funds to conduct restoration at the Golf Course and to further restoration research with UBC-Okanagan, Muirhead says.
We'll also use some of the grant to hire summer students in 2007, as well as an education co-ordinator. Without the support of the Gaming Commission, the Desert Society would really struggle to continue education programs and conservation research.
