Soapbox derby planned
The 1st Oliver Cubs and Beavers is hosting a soapbox derby on Skagit Avenue on April 26.
The cubs asked council for permission to close the road (from the top of Skagit at Tulameen Street to Highway 97) from 8 am to 4 pm.
The public is invited to check out all of the soapbox cars and cheer on the young racers.
Development variances approved
The Town has approved three variances to Zoning Bylaw 1330 to accommodate the construction of carports and decks at 6613 Park Drive.
The variances relate to the proposed expansion of Green Acres Mobile Home Park. These variances include a reduction of the minimum front, rear, interior side and exterior side yard setbacks from 4.5 metres to three metres.
In addition, there is a reduction of the minimum separation between manufactured homes from six metres to three metres.
The applicant states the development will provide five attractive, affordable new homes for seniors.
Town amends BFI contract
Council has authorized staff to revise the Town’s contract with BFI Canada for waste collection services.
The Town recently entered into a contract with Multi-Materials BC (MMBC) for curbside and recycling collection. Under this contract, the Town will collect recyclable materials and deliver them to a receiving depot. In return, the MMBC will pay the Town an annual incentive for this service.
The revised contract with BFI will mean the company will no longer be involved in sorting, shipping or marketing recyclable materials, only collecting them.

Council has invited Robert Linttell to give a presentation on the proposed South Okanagan Shuttle Services.
The group is asking for funding to help launch the program that would see a shuttle bus transport people to various stops along a route from Osoyoos to the Kelowna airport.
Mayor Ron Hovanes said it would be nice for young people to have this transportation option to attend Okanagan College without having to move out of Oliver.
Councillor Jack Bennest said they should pressure BC Transit to provide good quality transportation to Kelowna.
Councillor Dave Mattes reminded council that the Town already gives $4,500 a year to the transit society in the Okanagan.
Linttell, shuttle coordinator, may address council at a later date.
