With a “Yellow warning” for heat issued by Environment Canada this week and temperatures forecast to reach 37°C today (July 21) and 35°C Wednesday both Oliver and Osoyoos have opened their respective “cooling stations” for residents and visitors needing a respite from the heat.
Heat affects everyone but the risks are greater for seniors, people with pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes, heat disease or respiratory disease, people with mental illness, and people with substance-use disorders. Watch for the effects of heat illness and call 8-1-1 for advice.
During periods of extreme heath, the Okanagan Regional Library in both towns will serve as cooling stations and additionally in Osoyoos the Sonora Community Centre is also a designated cooling centre. Temperatures are expected to moderate by early Friday.
