Local MP Richard Cannings says folks in his riding will receive some much-needed inflation relief.
He says this comes after months of pressing the government to act, referring to PM Justin Trudeau delivering on his promise (to the NDP) to give lower income families a break. This includes a $650 per child dental care payment, doubling the GST rebate, and another $500 rent relief payment.
Cannings said this will help millions of lower income Canadians struggling with inflation pressures.
“Left to their own devices, the Liberals were never going to act,” he said, noting they voted with the Conservatives twice to turn back the NDP’s motion to provide dental coverage to all Canadians who didn’t have it.
Cannings said these funds are the first step to help families without dental coverage right now.
The MP explained the NDP offered to support the government in exchange for the creation of key programs such as dental care and direct action on the housing crisis.
Cannings said the relief comes as Canadians are experiencing staggering increases in the cost of living.
“Families are playing by the rules but can’t get ahead. Meanwhile, big companies are making billions in excess profits,” added Cannings. He stressed that nobody should have to make the heart-breaking choice of paying for dental care, food bills or rent.
Cannings said that dental care and pharmacare are integral in relieving the pressure on the current health care crisis.
“We’ve said from the beginning that we can help people without making inflation worse. We can ask the billionaires making huge profits on the backs of everyday Canadians to pay what they owe.”
The cooperation agreement between the Liberals and the NDP is set to last through 2025.
