The new Red Cross health equipment loan service in Oliver is now operating out of its new home at 146 Spruce Avenue in Oliver.
The new location provides a larger space for more equipment, a brighter client service area and ample parking for clients from across the South Okanagan, including many from Osoyoos.
Red Cross spokesman Andrew Hopkins said the office had to move from its former Kootenay Street home because the Town is selling the building.
The Red Cross provides short-term loans to all vulnerable clients in need of health equipment to recover from illness or injury, regardless of where they live or their ability to rent or buy.
“Over 70 per cent of our clients are seniors, many on fixed income,” Hopkins said. “The equipment helps them to live at home, and can shorten their hospital stays.”
Clients are referred by health care practitioners who prescribe the appropriate equipment to support client care at home.
Mobility aids and bathroom assistive aids are loaned on a regular basis. They include wheelchairs, walkers, bath seats, commodes, toilet seats, crutches, canes, and bed handles. Approximately 15 local volunteers manage and operate the Health Equipment Loan Program in Oliver.
The program in Oliver is made possible thanks to the financial support of donors, used equipment donations, and financial support from other agencies, groups and foundations through designated funds and grants.
Osoyoos residents regularly access the Oliver office for health equipment.
Osoyoos ran its own health care equipment loan program for more than 30 years, but closed more than two years ago and moved to Oliver after longtime volunteer Charlotte Sanktjohanser announced she had to retire due to declining health.
