Donations collected at four South Okanagan grocery stores are going to the victims of the recent Rock Creek and Oliver wildfires.
From August 14 to October 17, customers gave generously at the 20 checkouts across the four locations Of Buy-Low Foods Oliver, Buy-LowFood Grand Forks, Buy-Low Foods Osoyoos and AG Foods in Osoyoos and have raised just over $17,000.
“Our sincere wishes go to all those impacted by the fires as they begin to rebuild their lives with help from the Buy-Low Foods Group. We are grateful to those customers and staff members for their efforts” said Bob Huff, executive director for Habitat for Humanity Southeast B.C. The money will help Habitat for Humanity rebuild a home, that was destroyed by the fire and assist with the construction of outbuildings.
“While the people of Rock Creek and Oliver have begun the long journey to rebuild after the recent fires, it is uplifting to see the generous contributions made to this campaign,” says Sam Corea, director of retail operations for Buy-Low.
Over 30 homes were destroyed and hundreds of people in the Rock Creek and Oliver communities were evacuated during the South Okanagan and Boundary wildfires in August.
The Buy-Low Foods Group and Habitat for Humanity Southeast BC would like to acknowledge the people from the Boundary area that were engaged in the relief work in helping the families recover from this disaster and who gave of themselves in remarkable ways.
Residents from across the South Okanagan have been contributing to various fundraising efforts to assist wildfire victims in Rock Creek, Osoyoos and Oliver since the wildfires causes such serious damage back in the middle of August.
Amazingly, no one was seriously hurt or killed as a result of the wildfires.
