A witness has reported a brush fire off Highway 3 west of Osoyoos, just north of Nighthawk Road this afternoon.
Les W. Dewar from Desert Sage Studio reported that he saw the fire that started around 1 p.m.
“It had just erupted suddenly. Thinking someone tossed a cigarette, but who knows.”
Dewar said he was birdwatching on Nighthawk Road when he looked up to see a huge billow of smoke.
“I had three big white trucks roar past me on Nighthawk . . . I’m pretty sure they were hydro trucks, but when I went back past where the fire was, they were the ones fighting the fire.”
Dewar said there were no actual fire trucks on scene at that time. He reiterated that he’s not sure how the fire started.
Fire Information Officer Kyla Fraser from the BC Wildfire Service said the “Nighthawk Fire” 20 km southeast of Keremeos is classified as out of control at 0.8 hectares.
She said seven personnel are on scene with 10 more en route. There was air tanker support earlier this afternoon.
Fraser reported that no structures are threatened and the fire is not impacting highway traffic at this time.
The cause is still under investigation.
