The Oliver Fire Department cannot pinpoint the cause of a garage fire that could have easily destroyed a home on Road 2 last Saturday night.
Media relations officer Rob Graham told the Chronicle that because of the extensive damage they could not determine the cause.
Firefighters were called to the fire at approximately 10:30 pm on April 2 near the end of Road 2 west (a stone’s throw away from the Fairview Road intersection).
Graham said the garage/shed was fully engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived. In fact, one side (the rafters) of an adjacent home was starting to burn as well.
However, firefighters managed to quickly contain the fire and stop it from burning more of the residence, Graham said.
Two people were living in the home at the time but managed to escape without injuries. Graham noted that one occupant had been on the roof trying to stop the fire’s spread.
“The guys (firefighters) did a good job keeping it contained; it could have easily got into the roof . . . we could have had a house fire.”
It took the department about 30 minutes to control the blaze.
Graham said the danger was they didn’t know what was inside the shed, so they had to keep back. There was a diesel storage tank nearby, he pointed out.
A mini-van on site was also burned.
Fire officials continue to investigate.
