What is going on in the Rockcliffe/Morningstar neighbourhood?
Now you can’t even walk your dog for fear of Rover ingesting some kind of poison set out deliberately.
If you haven’t heard already, someone has been placing chunks of tainted wieners in the area.
Residents are asked to be vigilant by watching out for the safety of local pets and reporting anything suspicious.
Anyone who purposely goes out of his or her way to poison a neighbourhood needs help.
Let’s hope the police find the lead they are looking for to capture the suspect. No dog owner should have to live in fear every time they take their best friend for a walk.
Don’t forget the cats
This week’s heart-breaking story about the dying kitten is a reminder of the problem Oliver has with an overpopulation of cats.
Cat owners who do not neuter their felines may not realize how much they are contributing to all of this suffering. At the same time, municipalities and organizations need to work together to provide affordable or free spay/neutering programs. A lot of people can’t afford to sterilize their pets, so there must be an incentive to encourage them to do so.
Who’s worse?
We’re not sure – someone who deliberately poisons dogs or someone who tries to scam people at tax time.
A guy recently phoned a household, stating he was an officer investigating the lady of the house who runs a business (a daycare). He said he had a warrant to search the residence and noted the lady had to call a special number to address the issue.
The number on the call display was the legitimate number of Canada Revenue Agency, so the homeowner initially thought she was in trouble with the taxman, despite the fact she was already assessed $5,000 in taxes owed.
The lady was smart by not calling the special number. Instead, she called the fraud investigation department, and waited, and waited and waited. She couldn’t get through, so she gave up. (You gotta love this service; some guy is trying to rip you off and you can’t report it.)
The CRA has to do more to crack down on these scammers. Maybe if they put as much effort into catching these guys as they do taxing us, perhaps the world would be a better place.
