Society looks at re-branding
The Oliver Parks and Recreation Society wants a facelift to its logo.
As part of its 2014 strategic planning session, the society identified the need to update its logo.
“The re-branding is exciting for us as a board,” said chair Shiela Lange. “We feel it’s just time to update and refresh the look for Parks and Rec; we want to promote Parks and Rec effectively and this is one step.”
The board is reviewing various designs.
Sun Fun a big success
This summer’s “Sun Fun” day camp in Oliver was another success.
Coordinator Kiera Heinrichs reported an excellent season, with registered spaces filled most weeks, and even a waiting list.
Parks and Recreation has been approved for one Canada Summer Jobs grant for $2,000.
Kudos to parks staff
Do you think Oliver’s parks look spiffy? You can thank Parks and Recreation staff for that.
That’s what manager Carol Sheridan did in her report last week.
She said that facility attendants have done a great job maintaining and improving the condition of the parks, pool, arena and community hall this summer.
“We received several favourable compliments from the community at large about the condition of the parks,” Sheridan said.
She noted that staff had to deal with many challenges with the pool and parks facilities this summer.
Park operations will continue until October 6, at which time staff will be winterizing washrooms, including the Kinsmen splash park.
Sheridan said there have been requests from the community for year-round washroom access at Lion’s Park, so she is investigating “portable” options for this winter.
More shade, please
A meeting was held recently to discuss the success of Oliver’s Evening Market and Music in the Park this summer.
According to Parks and Recreation manager Carol Sheridan, all agreed that the Community Park was a good venue, which will continue for 2015.
She noted that concerns were expressed about finding more shade for spectators and performers. In addition, some suggested advertising the community hall as a rain location so that Music in the Park and the market could still continue in poor weather.
Sheridan said another suggestion was moving vendors closer to the stage and to have another meeting with Oliver country market in the hopes it will consider a partnership.
Prime time ice negotiated
Some negotiation was necessary at a recent Oliver arena ice user meeting.
The Monday night seniors group has been asking to start its regular playtime at 8 pm instead of 9 pm. But figure skaters and minor hockey players have regular Monday night practices that run back-to-back from 2:45-8:50 pm.
Parks and Recreation manager Carol Sheridan said she will be reviewing this request again in 2015.
“Best practice and standard ice use policy in the industry is that minor hockey sports gets priority for booking during prime time. We do not want to risk losing any user groups.”
