An Oliver man who likes to travel is trying to convince Town council that the municipality needs a public sani-dump.
Albert Makarenko made a presentation to Committee of the Whole last week regarding his concern that there is no facility for tourists passing through town. He noted that Centennial RV Park has a sani-dump, but it charges $10, which he believes is unreasonable.
Makarenko said there are 125 towns in BC that have sani-dumps. Ninety-seven are free, while 28 charge $2 to $5 for the service.
“I agree with a user fee, but not $10 . . . I guess we don’t want tourists.”
Councillor Dave Mattes explained that people who stay at Centennial RV Park get to use the sani-dump for free, but those who are not registered guests are charged for the service.
Corporate Officer Cathy Cowan said the park’s leaseholder is willing to “work with people” who think the $10 charge is too expensive.
But Councillor Jack Bennest said if people can afford to holiday in Arizona, they should be able to afford a $10 sani-dump fee.
“To me, $10 is not a lot of money.”
There was some discussion about the possibility of establishing a public sani-dump in town, which would cost $25,000 to $30,000, according to Director of Operations Shawn Goodsell.
But Mattes questioned whether the Town would want to go into competition with Centennial RV Park.
