A small grass fire near Heritage House on Meadows Drive on Wednesday afternoon created some tense moments.

Firefighters were called to a grass fire on Salamander Avenue at approximately 4:15 pm. However, crews were called off before they arrived on scene.

It was reported that some spot burning was taking place in the area when the flames crept up to the edge of the road. The fear was the fire had the potential to jump the road and climb the bank on the other side. However, most if not all of the flames were extinguished by the time one pickup truck from the fire hall arrived.

Fire department spokesman Rob Graham said people don’t realize how dry the grass is right now. “It’s incredibly dry (out there).”

As a result, people are asked to use extreme caution with any outdoor burning this time of year.
