For Michelle Morisset, quilting is more than just a creative outlet. The Oliver resident is doing her part to bring comfort to the victims of the recent flooding in Southern Alberta. Morisset is the owner/operator of the Wine Country Quilters Market, which she said has recently joined forces with Quilting for Calgary, a not-for-profit group established in the wake of the June 20 disaster.
The group is aiming to gather 3,000 quilts, which it will distribute to families and individuals affected by the flooding in Calgary and Canmore.
Morisset said she learned about the group on Facebook and felt compelled to offer help. But she wasn’t the only one; within less than 24 hours of sending out a letter to local quilters last Thursday evening, she received six quilts, and expected to see more come in over the weekend. As of Monday, she had received 22.
“Quilters are very generous people,” she said. “I’m very pleased with what we have so far. The response has been great. I hope it keeps going.”
Morisset doesn’t have a particular number in mind when it comes to the amount of quilts that come in. She is confident she will receive quite a few, but noted she will be happy with whatever she gets. She needs them by August 15 in order to get them to Calgary for September 1.
The quilts will be delivered to Alberta by some of her friends and customers. She said Purolator is also donating 150 free deliveries throughout the country for Quilting for Calgary. The group will begin distributing the donations on September 15. For more information, visit Quilting for Calgary on Facebook or contact Morisset at [email protected].
