Jasdeep Sandhu, who graduated from Osoyoos Secondary School (OSS) in June, has been awarded the Governor General’s Medal for academic achievement.
New OSS principal Scott Tremblay presented it to her on Monday.
Sandhu said when she learned she was receiving it after receiving a voice message, she didn’t even know the medal was something given out.
“I’m really honoured and happy that I got the award,” she said.
Tremblay said only one student per school receives the award.
Sandhu will be attending University of British Columbia Okanagan in Kelowna where she will be studying sciences in biochemistry.
“I definitely worked really hard getting good grades,” she said. “Maintaining a good academic standard has always been something that I found really important, so I just worked hard, not really knowing that this was what I was going to get.”
Asked if she’ll put the same effort into her university studies, Sandhu said she may even work harder in hopes of moving on to graduate school.
