RCMPAn Osoyoos man and woman are in custody facing charges of possessing stolen property after their vehicle got stuck in a fence on Sunday on the road to the dump.

Osoyoos RCMP said they received a call at 6:50 p.m. Sunday about a stuck car. The caller was aware of recent thefts at the Osoyoos landfill.

Police spoke to the vehicle occupants and after investigating both were arrested.

RCMP said a 43-year-old male who is “well known to police” was arrested along with a 20-year-old female, both from Osoyoos.

Police found in their possession a credit card that was traced to a recent break-in at a local business. They also recovered four chainsaws that they said are not the ones stolen earlier this month from Westminster Rentals.

The owners of the chainsaws have not yet been identified. Cpl. Jason Bayda asks anyone who has had chainsaws stolen to contact the Osoyoos RCMP Detachment to describe them at 250-495-7236.

Police seek lone suspect with big feet in break-in at landfill site

RCMP are seeking a suspect with big feet in connection with a theft at the Osoyoos landfill site that was reported on Friday.

Sometime during the previous night, a suspect entered the fenced area and stole a tarp and some non-valuable refuse.

Judging by footprints in the snow, it appears there was only one suspect, Osoyoos RCMP said. The suspect also appeared to be wearing large boots, possibly size 14.

Cyclist, 60, wipes out on slippery road and receives head injuries

A 60-year-old Osoyoos cyclist was taken to hospital with apparent head injuries following a morning accident on Monday.

Osoyoos RCMP said it appears the man lost control on slippery pavement and wiped out. There were no vehicles involved.

The accident occurred on 92nd Ave. east of the Shell service station. Police said there were no witnesses, but a neighbour heard the accident and called police.

The cyclist was dazed and was unable to answer the officer’s questions.

Vehicles stolen from local homes, but thieves failed to steal show car

Several vehicles were stolen from Osoyoos residences in the past week.

A pink 2003 Ford F-350 truck was reported stolen on Saturday morning.

The vehicle was located later that day behind some bushes on Tuc-el-Nuit Dr. in Oliver and it was returned to its owner.

Last Thursday a black 2001 Ford F-250 was reported stolen from the front of a home on 89th Street.

It was located abandoned the following day in Grand Forks. Osoyoos RCMP said the truck had a lockbox with numerous tools, but the box wasn’t taken.

They are examining the truck for forensic evidence.

RCMP on Saturday were then called to a home on Jubilee Dr. where two more Ford pick-up trucks, an F-350 and an F-250 were broken into.

The suspect or suspects tried unsuccessfully to steal the vehicles by tampering with the ignitions.

Attached to one truck, but not stolen, was a trailer with an award-winning show car.

Friends help local man track and recover ATV

Friends helped an Olympic View Dr. resident locate a stolen ATV after the utility trailer in which it was sitting was reported stolen last Friday.

Osoyoos RCMP said the trailer was located a few hours later near 46th Ave. and 107th St., but the green Polaris ATV was missing from it.

The friends followed the tracks in the snow, several times losing the trail and then finding it again. They eventually found the ATV along the canal walkway near Road 18.

There was minor damage because the ignition was tampered with, but thanks to the diligence of his friends, the owner was lucky to have the ATV returned to him, police said.

Passport, credit cards, ID stolen from unlocked car

Two cars were broken into on Oleander Dr. last Friday, and in one case a purse, credit cards, identification and a passport was stolen.

Osoyoos RCMP said an unlocked 2002 Pontiac Sunfire was entered and the purse, wallet, bank cards, credit cards and other items were removed.

A second car, a 2005 Hyundai Sonata, was entered and about $20 in loose coins was taken. The owner believed the vehicle was locked, but the window may have been down a few inches allowing the thief to gain entry.

Resident returns from weekend to find home broken into and surveillance video system gone

A homeowner on 62nd Ave. returned from a weekend away on Sunday to find his residence had been broken into and items removed.

Osoyoos RCMP said it’s not clear how the suspects gained entry and they also covered their tracks by stealing a security camera recording system.

A NextBox console, cash drawer, cigars and jewelry were reported stolen.

Anyone with information about these or other crimes is asked to call Osoyoos RCMP at 250-495-7236 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
