A WORD ABOUT A LETTER THAT APPEARED LAST WEEK

OSOYOOS TIMES-January 14, 2009

In last week's issue of the Osoyoos Times, a letter to the editor appeared where the writer brought up a bad experience with a local business.

The writer also brought up an experience with another local business which gave him service above and beyond the call of duty to rectify the bad experience.

Because the letter was written within the context of recent efforts to promote small business in Osoyoos, the Times decided to run the letter, but with the names of the businesses removed to protect all parties involved.

Publishing this letter was an error in judgment as the business which went out of its way to help the writer has been questioned as to whether or not it was the good guy in the situation which the writer described.

So, the Times apologizes for any confusion or inconvenience caused to the business which helped the writer from the printing of the letter.

Because of problems such as this, the Times wants to make it clear to our readers and future letter writers that we will not publish letters to the editor that address disputes between customers and businesses.

Such letters do not belong in the pages of this newspaper and disputes of this nature are between the customers and businesses and/or the courts.
