BEACH SECURITY CO-OPERATION A STEP IN RIGHT DIRECTION
(OSOYOOS TIMES — August 1, 2007) —
It's good to hear from local RCMP Detachment Commander Kurt Lozinski that increased co-operation this summer between his police and the local parks and beaches bylaw enforcement officers is having a good impact on the situation on Osoyoos' beaches at night.
With so many visitors, and some vagrants, travelling through town between May and September, the beaches are a natural draw not just for the good fun activities, but also for drunken, potentially violent behaviour and for those who would want to set up overnight camp.
Recognizing that extra manpower was needed to patrol the town's parks and beaches, Council last summer increased funding to add a position.
That was commendable. And now, this year's move by the Mounties and the bylaw enforcement team to work more closely is another step in the right direction.
Things aren't perfect yet.
At the Times, we have received two or three letters so far this summer from upset tourists who have witnessed vandalism and rude, threatening behaviour on the 'motel row' beach.
Things are moving in the right direction. We need to applaud our local police and enforcement team for their approach so far, and encourage them to be increasingly vigilant.
On a related note, this increased co-operation could offer a model for the increased downtown night security being sought by the local Chamber of Commerce.
In response to the Chamber's request for the Town's help with security, Council has asked its staff to look into the issue.
Perhaps some sharing of the load through a co-operative effort by downtown merchants, the Town, and the RCMP could provide a more secure nighttime environment for everyone in Osoyoos' core area?
