A boat passes an RCMP watercraft on Osoyoos Lake. (Vanessa Broadbent / Osoyoos Times)

Dear Editor:

My condolences to the family and friends of the two people who lost their lives in a boating accident on Osoyoos Lake this past weekend. Hopefully many people will take this as a wake up call when they head out on the water.

Please contact your local politicians and demand more RCMP presence on Osoyoos Lake. Currently there only seems to be officers on the lake during long weekends.

There should also be improved safety requirements by boaters. How about starting with putting up a red flag in your craft anytime someone is in the water? (As they do in Washington State.) People who rent boats or jet skis should have to have a boating license like everyone else.

Tragedies like this seem to happen every year somewhere in the Okanagan, lets try to avoid a reoccurrence.
