With recent cold temperatures, the Osoyoos RCMP is reminding people to be aware of the risks if they are considering going out onto ice-covered lakes.

“Generally, you should stay off ice that is less than four inches thick,” Sgt. Jason Bayda said.

“Even if the ice is more than four inches thick where you test it, it is rarely the same thickness across a body of water.”

Bayda said testing the ice frequently as you travel across an area is essential, and spots with cracks or moving water should be avoided.

Bringing safety gear is also recommended, as well as a tool like an ice pick to pull yourself out of the water if necessary.

“A life jacket is just as important on a frozen lake as it is in the summer time,” Bayda said. “And never go out on the ice alone.”
