Like the Town of Osoyoos, Oliver is not getting involved in an interim RCMP auxiliary program at this time.

Council debated the issue on July 13 relating to correspondence from provincial director of police services Brenda Butterworth-Carr.

She stated the auxiliary program has undergone significant changes, with a B.C. model currently being explored. The auxiliary program consists of civilian members of the public undergoing training to assist the RCMP with law enforcement.

Butterworth-Carr is asking municipalities if they want to proceed with an interim program (while a new one is being pursued). The estimated cost per auxiliary candidate is between $1,200 and $1,500.

Mayor Martin Johansen said concerns have been expressed about auxiliary constable uniforms.

“The main concern is the uniforms do not visually convey professionalism or the authority held by auxiliary constables.”

And until an acceptable standard is developed, they are not willing to pay for the uniforms ($700 for each candidate).

Johansen said more work needs to be done to properly develop the new program.

“I don’t think we should participate until all the details are established and concerns are addressed.”

Councillor Aimee Grice said it’s a little too early to get on board with the program as it stands.

Councillor Dave Mattes said he would much rather spend money on establishing the South Okanagan intervention table than a new auxiliary program.
