For a town of 5,000 people, Osoyoos sure has lots to do.

Where we differ from larger cities is that so many of the activities are organized by local individuals, organizations and small businesses rather than major corporate promoters.

Just this week, for example, Osoyoos Secondary School is holding its musical play of Aladdin.

It’s running from Thursday to Sunday (see story for times) and tickets will be in demand. Last year’s production of Beauty and the Beast was a sellout.

The students have been working hard on it since October under the guidance and enthusiasm of teacher Sarah Gilchrist.

The colourful costumes and choreography look fantastic.

This should be a show that people of any age will enjoy, whether or not they have connections with OSS.

Meanwhile, on Thursday night, the Sun Bowl Skating Club is holding its annual year-end show.

Based on previous years, this too should be an event that many people can enjoy, whether or not they have a child in the skating program.

In past years, the shows have been well paced with a good mix of cute little youngsters finding their feet on skates and talented and experienced skaters who put on an impressive performance.

It’s at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Sun Bowl and admission is by donation.

Our Wednesday publication date is a bit awkward to highlight the Coyotes playoff excitement, but there should be some incredible hockey this week.

The Coyotes are now facing the Kelowna Chiefs in the division final.

The first game was Tuesday night – after this paper went to press, but before you read this. However, if you’re reading this on Wednesday, game two takes place that evening.

Minor hockey is also busy these weekends with playoffs.

For the more artistically inclined, another beautiful show opens this Saturday at The Art Gallery Osoyoos. It features the work – mostly paintings – of South Okanagan and Similkameen members of the Federation of Canadian Artists.

These are among the top local artists and it looks like an impressive show.

In recent and coming weeks, there have also been some excellent live music performances for all tastes and more are coming.

The Elks Hall, Jojo’s Cafe, the Legion, the Seniors Centre all hold regular music events. And the Osoyoos and South Okanagan concert societies bring in some great performances.

And those are just a few.

We’re lucky to live in a community where so much is going on. For a town this size, it’s certainly not a sleepy one.
