Oliver town council has agreed to give the Harvest Hut $1,600 for a new branded tent to continue sharing fresh produce with the community.
The Hut is open to everyone, not just those battling food insecurity.
Anyone with excess vegetables in their garden is invited to bring them to the Hut for others to enjoy.
This year the Hut had eight volunteers, two of whom visited area fruit stands for donations. A total of six farms took part in the program. They included Nature’s Basket, Oliver Garden & Fruit Market, Sunview Market, The Fruit Cart, Valley Best Produce, and one anonymous wholesaler.
Chief Financial Officer Wayne Anderson said the number of people visiting the Hut was much higher than in 2021, which may have been COVID related.
Anderson pointed out there was $326 in financial donations this year, adding that food donations to the Food Bank totalled nearly 250 kilograms of produce.
Food bank advocate Dale Dodge told the Times Chronicle that this year’s Knights of Columbus Christmas hamper campaign will distribute approximately 225 hampers, which is a 12 per cent increase over last year.
