An unattended fire east of Oliver on Sunday has drawn the contempt of several people in the community.
Photos were posted to Oliver’s community hub Facebook page depicting a smouldering log fire in a grassy clearing on Wolf Cub forest service road off McKinney Road.
“I am speechless beyond words of the carelessness and complete selfishness, disrespect of some people,” said the photographer.
“No respect for our beautiful mountains and animal kind.”
One of the photos depicts what first appears to be a carcass of a wolf or coyote propped on a log. However, one person commented it may have been a stuffed animal.
Another person said: “How tragic that there are unfeeling, despicable beings out there that do this.”
Aydan Coray from BC Wildfire Service told the Times Chronicle that the fire was reportedly unattended approximately eight kilometres east of Oliver. She noted that crews subsequently extinguished it.
Coray urges people to use extreme caution when burning anything because it is very dry this spring.
Neither the Oliver RCMP nor the Oliver Fire Department were notified of the incident. Fire department spokesman Rob Graham said what happened was quite disturbing and “sad” that some people are still not getting the message about the hazards of leaving fires unattended.
