A strata corporation in Oliver says it is being overrun with citizens thinking the property is a town street.

Riverside Villas in the “Meadows” area wants to meet with council to discuss this “safety” issue in the neighbourhood.

The 22-unit strata complex has operated in Redwing Place for nearly 30 years.

At one point the Town of Oliver paid the corporation $1 for an easement granted for the municipality’s water and sewer lines. In addition, the strata promised to grant public access across the property from Redwing to the hike and bike trail.

But much has changed since then with increased development.

Since the easement was granted, the strata says four other access points were established between Meadows Drive and the hike and bike trail.

“Our dilemma at the moment is we are overrun with citizens and people who think our property is a town street,” the strata pointed out in a letter to council.

As a result, the corporation wants to pursue an “ambitious” plan to assert more authority over the five acres it owns.

This plan involves re-establishing a limited access gate at the hike and bike trail entrance/exit, with signage and demarcation of private property. The use would be for pedestrians only – not motorcycles, scooters, skateboards or bicycles.

The strata requests that the Town contribute to all of the security features and signage, in addition to clearing snow from the trail to Redwing Place.

Council will discuss the issue at tonight’s regular meeting starting at 7 p.m.
