Groundbreaking is expected to begin this Friday on Oliver’s new sport court development project.
A new asphalt surface will be added to the east end of the tennis courts to house four new pickleball playing areas. In addition, the existing tennis courts will be repaired and resurfaced, plus a new perimeter fence (and gates) will be installed.
Oliver Parks and Recreation was successful in its application for funding in the amount of $42,567.
“Having new and improved courts that offer low or no-cost outdoor physical activity, sport and socializing opportunities will be a long-term benefit to the entire community”, said Parks and Recreation manager Carol Sheridan.
The total cost of the project is estimated at $140,000.
Sheridan said tennis remains a popular activity in Oliver, but noted that pickleball club membership has grown from approximately 50 players in 2017 to more than 120 this year. This has put a demand on court time, prompting the Oliver Sport Court Development Committee to act by spearheading the expansion.
The project will start with rough grading and base preparation this fall. Surface paving will begin in May of 2022.
A public ground-breaking event will be held this Friday, Oct. 22 at noon.
