It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Shirley Caroline Matthews on March 5th, 2025. Shirley joins her parents, Ernie & Elsie Gaertner in Heaven.

Shirley moved with her family from a large farm in Tisdale Saskatchewan to the growing community of Osoyoos in 1950. Along with her siblings Ron, Marvin & Lillian (Rusch) Shirley attended the local elementary & highschool, and met many lifelong friends through Grace Lutheran Church.

From an early age Shirley loved playing piano & singing. Because of her love of music and faith she was destined to be in the Church choir, and enjoyed volunteering as secretary for many years at Grace Lutheran. Shirley took great pride in creating the weekly church bulletins, and engaged in bible studies throughout her lifetime.

Shirley and her then husband Tom Matthews, ran the Starlite Motel together just as tourism in Osoyoos started to flourish. For over 15 years they enjoyed being on the beach, raising their boys & visiting with guests that came back year after year.

Shirley will be sadly missed by her 2 sons, Dwayne (Brenda) & Lloyd (Kelly-Anne) and her beloved grandchildren, Ryan, Bradley Mason (Robyn), Jessica (Matt) & Alexander.

Our family’s heartfelt gratitude goes out to Karen, the staff and caregivers at Mariposa & Doctor Calder for the endless hours of care & understanding given to our mom, gramma & sister. We are comforted that she passed so peacefully in her sleep & is now in the arms of the Lord.

A funeral service will be held at Grace Lutheran Church in Osoyoos on Monday, June 2nd at 11 am followed by an internment at Osoyoos Cemetery.
