Mary ‘May’ Macleod Cassells
November 17, 1941 – January 6, 2026
On Tuesday, January 6th, 2026, Mary ‘May’ Macleod Cassells passed away peacefully in Osoyoos at the age of 84. Born on November 17, 1941, in her grandmother’s house in Torrance, Scotland, to Colin Haydn Jackman and Mary Duncan Gilchrist McNicol McLeod, a machinist and bookbinder. May had two younger brothers, Colin, who lives with this family in Inverness, Scotland, and Peter, who passed away in 1995.
May married Angus Cassells in March 1968 in Glasgow, Scotland, and they lived in the town of Kirkintilloch near Glasgow until emigrating to Vancouver, Canada, in the 1970s. Angus and May had no children, and years later they separated.
For health reasons, May retired from BCAA and moved to Osoyoos, where the weather was much better for her. Even though she always had health issues, May made the very best of each day. She took great pride in her home. She enjoyed entertaining and spending time with her friends. She loved to visit, play cards and games with Gemma, Doreen, Lucy, Christine, Suzanne, and many other friends.
Even though May had no children, she was very close to Donna Roman and Diana Petkau and was known as Grandma May to their family. Which May loved.
May’s passion was knitting; from her beautiful sweaters to her slippers, she loved to give to her friends.
May also loved music. She would go on road trips with Donna and Diana, and they would turn up the music really loud and sing along.
One trip that May always treasured was when she visited Honolulu, Hawaii, with her friends Gemma, Donna and Harvie. She always wanted to go there; it was her dream vacation, she had so much fun, it was a trip she never forgot!
Even though she lived in Canada most of her life, May loved Scotland and her dear family. Miles kept them apart, but they were always in her heart. She always stayed true to her Scottish heritage.
Special thanks to Diane Lang, the staff at Mariposa and her Dr’s who cared for her.
May you will be missed but forever in all our hearts.
