Don McLarty

November 27, 1939 – November 16, 2023

Don McLarty a beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away on November 16 at the age of 83 after a deterioration of his health. He was born on November 27, 1939, in St. Walburg, Saskatchewan, and embarked on a remarkable journey filled with adventure, dedication and love. Growing up in a family connected to the construction industry, Don experienced a nomadic childhood, moving from Ontario to British Columbia. The family settled in Hope, BC, in 1945, and Don became a permanent resident, graduating from Hope Secondary School. His early education was a patchwork of experiences, attending various schools and even receiving home schooling in more remote areas. In 1960, Don began his professional career with the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) in Keremeos. His commitment to excellence and hard work led to a successful career with the bank, where he held various roles, including teller, loan officer, credit inspector and manager of six different branches. His last branch was at Kingsway and McMurray in Burnaby, where he retired in May 1993. On March 4, 1967, Don married the love of his life, Ruth Stephens, and they began their married life in Kelowna before Don was transferred to various locations throughout the province. His dedication to community service was evident through his involvement in Kiwanis, Rotary, Lions Club and his role as president of the Fernie Golf Club during his working years. Retirement brought Don and Ruth to Oliver, where he continued to make a positive impact on the community. He served as a director and later as president of Fairview Golf Course, reflecting his passion for the outdoors and companionship with his friends. An avid hunter and fisherman, Don found solace and joy in the natural world, sharing these experiences with friends and family. Don is survived by his loving wife, Ruth, and their children, Joanne (James) and Stephen (Kris), along with grandsons Aidan and Brennan Doyle. He is predeceased by his parents, Joseph (1993) and Anne (1998). A celebration of life will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, Diabetes Canada or a charity of your choice. Don will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to family, his vibrant spirit and the positive impact he made on the lives of those around him. May he rest in peace, surrounded by the beauty of the landscapes he loved so dearly. Condolences and tributes may be directed to the family by visiting www.nunes-pottinger.com
