Betty Hilda McIvor (Simpson)
Betty Hilda McIvor (Simpson) passed away on December 23, 2023, at the age of 100. Betty was born at her grandparents’ home in New Westminster, BC. In her youth she enjoyed sports, family outings to White Rock, and riding miles on her bicycle. When she was 12 and the family was farming near Chilliwack, a severe ice storm hit and isolated them for three weeks; so they made ice cream from the milk that they couldn’t ship, and her mom taught Betty to embroider and quilt. Years later Betty used such skills to create many treasured items for family. After graduating from Senior Matric in Burnaby Betty began training at Essondale to become a mental-health nurse, but she left to work at a plywood mill before starting training at VGH to become an RN, her eventual career. After nursing for several years in Vancouver she decided to try small-town life, and in 1952 she became Matron of the Wells, BC, hospital. On her first date with Ross in March of 1954, the host of the town’s annual dance introduced her as “the future Mrs. Ross McIvor!”–and in fact they married that November. When their kids were young they moved to Oliver, BC. After a year of just enjoying the Okanagan, Betty returned to nursing but also kept busy with gardening, sewing, family life, and hosting the many friends and family who visited them and enjoyed summers by their pool. Later at Park Avenue Estates in Oliver Betty and Ross had many good neighbours and new friends. Betty especially enjoyed the ladies’ exercise group, which always included time for coffee and visiting. When she was 95 Betty moved to Richmond, BC, to live with her son and daughter-in-law, Colin and Laura. She walked the neighbourhood using her Nordic poles and loved spending time relaxing on the back deck by the fish pond with a glass of wine. Betty is survived by her son Colin (Laura), daughter Hilda (Tim), grandchildren Cathryn, Jeannie, Bronwyn, and Thomas; and great-grandchildren Madelyn and Ellison.
