THIRD READING GIVEN TO ZONING AMENDMENT FOR MARINA

Following a public hearing where roughly 20 people spoke up, Osoyoos council gave third reading to a zoning amendment that would allow for the development of a marina at the Lions Park lagoon.
Nearly 90 people gathered at the Sonora Community Centre on July 6 for the second public hearing on the matter, followed by a special meeting of council where the reading was given.

DEADLINE TO FINALIZE DESERT PARK LEASE EXTENDED TO SEPTEMBER

Working out a contract for the operation of Osoyoos’s Desert Park has been a bigger process than originally anticipated, said Osoyoos Mayor Stu Wells, and that means that contract may now not be ready until the fall.
“There are bigger deficiencies than either party had anticipated,” Wells said, referring to the contract that is in the works between the Town and South Interior Recreational Equine Centre (SIREC) for the running of the recreational facility.

TOWN HIRES COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT MANAGER

The Town of Osoyoos has hired a manager to oversee economic and community development.
Jim Newman, who is currently the economic development manager of Sturgeon County, Alta., will take on the Town’s new position of community development manager beginning Aug. 3.

MOTORCYCLIST DIES IN MOUNTAIN CRASH – updated

A 55-year-old Alberta man was killed in a head-on collision on Anarchist Mountain on the evening of July 8.
The man was riding a Honda motorcycle westbound on Hwy. 3 near Bobcat Court when he crossed over the highway’s centre line at roughly 8:25 p.m. and collided with a beige Ford Freestar minivan heading east.
