Luiz de Medeiros Borges

December 28, 1932 to March 14, 2021

On Sunday, March14, 2021, Mr. Luizde Medeiros Borges of Osoyoos passed away suddenly at home at the age of 88 years.

He was predeceased by his father Manuel de Medeiros Borges; mother Maria da Conceicao de Sousa and brother Denis Antonio Borges.

Luiz will be fondly remembered by his loving family including wife Helena; son Roger (Christine);

daughter Yvette; grandchildren Evan, Ceanna and Jacob; sisters Lidia Borges, Solome (Manuel) Costa,

Natalia Raposo; brother Avelino (Ermelida) Borges; sisters Angelina (Fernando) Carreiro, Lucrecia

Muniz, Leona (Joe) Gaspar as well as many nieces and nephews.

Luiz immigrated to Canada in 1956 and worked as a farm labourer from 1956 – 1957. Then with the

CPRail in Beaverdell from 1959 to 1963. He would come to Osoyoos on weekends and work for Mr. Joe

Fernandes. While working for Mr. Fernandes he met and fell in love with the boss’s daughter, Helena and

they married in 1964. They were the first Portuguese couple to marry in Osoyoos.

He purchased his first farm in 1964 near the US border, later purchased his father-in-law’s east bench

farms in 1966. Luiz was an orchardist for the rest of his life and never retired. He enjoyed getting to

know all of his seasonal workers, treating them with respect and receiving that respect back making for

some life long friendships. They would return year after year even if just for a visit.

Luiz never missed a 649 and Lotto Max draw ever. He enjoyed drinking his homemade wine and watching

cowboy movies during the winter months. He loved picking peaches as well as giving fruit to friends and

others in the community. Loved sharing old stories with friends and family. He also loved dancing at

family parties, was the life of the party with some interesting dance moves. Luiz was a real Genuine

Soul, down to earth, kind hearted loving man. He will be truly missed to all that knew and loved him.

A private small family funeral is planned due to restrictions.
